Toddler

Ages 18 months to 3 years

Our Toddler program, designed for children aged 18 months to 3 years, develops each Toddler’s intrinsic motivation and growing sense of autonomy, guiding them on a journey toward independence. Emphasizing practical life skills and hand-eye coordination, authentic Montessori teaching materials lay a strong foundation for success in advanced concepts in the Primary years. Designed to encourage concentration, problem-solving, and a sense of achievement, materials allow children to choose, use, and clean up independently.

Guides assist Toddlers in their drive to do things alone, promoting confidence and competence, while also facilitating communication among peers. A dedicated self-care area instills toilet awareness and independence in personal hygiene, encompassing skills like nose-wiping and handwashing. In our Toddler studios, the learning environment encourages further language acquisition, observation of social skills, free exploration, and the expression of curiosity and creativity.

Transparent Classroom

We prioritize clear communication with Toddler parents through Transparent Classroom, a Montessori-focused student record-keeping system. This platform enables us to monitor and report daily activities, including attendance, nap time, meals, toileting, the child's daily activities, and lessons presented. Parents receive a daily email notification summarizing these activities for seamless updates.

Learning Outcomes

Following their experience in our Toddler program, children at Terra School seamlessly transition into the Primary environment. Language skills are forged through “sportscasting” in the environment, labeling and naming each item and experience around them. Toddlers are exposed to preliminary early childhood materials and are beginning their lessons in phonemic awareness. We instill a love for learning by allowing Toddlers to follow their interests and explore activities that align with their natural curiosity, fostering a positive attitude toward education.

As they prepare to move to the Primary classroom, our Toddlers:

  • Have an understanding of toileting procedures and self-care.

  • Have spent their time setting the table, cleaning up their belongings, and establishing the care of and routine within their environment.

  • Can follow multi-step directions, think more concretely, and have developed executive functioning skills.

  • Have an understanding of social skills and are beginning to ask more complex questions.

  • Have challenged their gross and fine motor skills.

  • Are ready to take on the increased academic challenges of the Primary environment.
